Telkom has confirmed ADSL downtime has occurred across various regions of South Africa today, though it is yet to ascertain the reasons behind it.
Telkom spokesperson Pynee Chetty told HumanIPO Telkom was in the process of investigating the source of the problems, which he said were not a nationwide problem but were occurring across various regions of the country.
“It is in the best interests of Telkom and our customers to fix the problem as soon as possible,” he said. “That’s what technicians are working on.”
He said some Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) which suffered outages were restarting on their own, with the self-restoration making it more difficult to ascertain what the problem is.
“As soon as it is identified we will get onto fixing it,” he said.
South African internet service providers (ISPs) Afrihost, MWEB and WebAfrica used their Facebook pages to confirm the outages, issuing assurances they would provide more information once the cause is ascertained.
“We’ve received confirmation that Telkom has a nationwide outage affecting DSL. We unfortunately don’t have an ETA. We’ll update with more info,” Afrihost posted.
MWEB informed customers that ADSL was coming back online but it was not yet at full capacity.
“We are starting to see progress in some regions, however we are not back to 100% yet,” the company posted.
