Uganda’s New Vision switches to paid online subscriptions

The digital version of Uganda’s leading print newspaper New Vision is now exclusively available for paid online subscribers.

The online version is a replica of the New Vision, Bukedde, Etop, Rupiny and Orumuri newspapers.

The company stated that New Vision and Bukedde can however only be accessed upon subscription, a move likely upset some of its site’s visitors.

A number of the online readers have gone to express their disapproval of the move by writing in the website’s comments section.

It seems the goal by the leading newspaper is to monetize their website. It is interesting to note that New Vision’s rival, The Daily Mirror, still offers free online reading of news content and it would be interesting to see how this will affect New Vision’s online readership.
