Upcoming African Startup Events, 22-31 August

Africa’s tech industry has been highlighted for success in the coming years. This development is what is said to mark the growth of a similar startup industry to that of North America, the Silicon Valley, in Africa to be known as the Silicon Savannah. Here are the upcoming technology events in Kenya and South Africa for the next two weeks.

Africa’s Talking AP
When: 22 August
Where: iHub, Nairobi

Africa’s Talking AP is an event for Africastalking Ltd to hold an API walkthrough. Africastalking Ltd offers Bulk SMS, Short Codes & Premium SMS, and USSD as well as customized mobile messaging solutions for individuals, businesses and developers. We deliver and receive SMS from all Kenyan networks as well as international networks. With more than 20 million mobile phone users in Kenya, mobile is the way to go for communication.

TEDxLemek: 2012
When: 25-26 August
Where: The Maasai Mara, Kenya

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

Charges: Sliding-scale registration fee ranging from 2,000 KES to 10,000 KES

Wireless Wednesday

Where: 3rd Floor, Bishop Magua Centre, George Padmore Rd, Nairobi

Wireless Wednesday is an event organized by m:lab East Africa for the purpose of encouraging interaction between developers/entrepreneurs and potential users of sectoral innovations using mobile tech platforms. This month’s theme touches on the review of Mobile Apps in Agriculture that Target Post Harvesting. The event is supported by USAID through DAI.

Software Freedom Day 2012 Kenya
When: 31 August – 1 September
Where: Strathmore University, Madaraka Estate, Nairobi West, Nairobi

The Software Freedom day is a concept that was started by the Software Freedom Foundation and is aimed to celebrate the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) movement and community. It is also meant to educate the public about the benefits of using FOSS. SFD is held every 3rd Saturday of September and organized by local FOSS communities. However, a team organizing an SFD event in their locality are free to alter the date to suit the local requirements and circumstances. This year’s event is organized by the Linux Professional Association of Kenya.

Charges: KSh 3,000 to be paid in advance

Mobile Entertainment Africa 2012

Mobile Entertainment Africa is firmly established as Africa’s leading event focusing on the mobile entertainment ecosystem. Startup Weekend is an intense 54-hour event focusing on building a Web or mobile application that is set to form the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend.
