Kenyan university to host tech expo in November

Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has scheduled this year’s Tech Expo for November 1 and 2 at the college’s main campus in the capital Nairobi.

The third of its kind, the expo’s organisers are currently asking for submissions from techies to be posted at the official website.

Dubbed the JKUAT Tech Expo 3.0, it will help highlight new student driven innovations and ideas.

This year, there are five categories to choose from, depending on what one wants to showcase at the expo:

*Software design: These are any innovations that can be used on desktops, mobile applications or can be Web-based solutions.

*Embedded systems: This category will host solutions that can be embedded, irrespective of the normal computer control system.

*Engineering and architecture: This category will handle projects that deal with mechanical design, civil engineering, material design and usage, architecture and landscape architecture.

*Agriculture: This will entirely deal with farming, food production, animal health, pest control and better farming solutions.

*Multimedia: This category will be represented by radio, audio, and video innovations. All innovations from this category will be uploaded on the Tech Expo website to be judged before presentation.

The Tech Expo is supported by Cellulant, PesaPal, Google, Data Logic, Dealfish website, Samsung, Nokia and Kenya ICT Board.

Last year, GangaMea won the first position in the Agriculture category with software that can be used for diagnosis of crop diseases.

On the software design, three entries made it to the final list. Click-A-House a management system for property, M-Shamba platform providing vital information to farmers and JKUAT 3D an android software that maps out the campus, all emerged as category winners.

In the Embedded system category, Wirelessly Controlled Robotic Car(Mtafutaji), GPS Based Real Time Asset Tracking System and Whiskers an application to aid vision impaired persons, won the category.
