With the aim of competing more strongly with Apple’s iPhone, Samsung Mobile has unveiled a smaller version of its popular Galaxy S3 smartphone, just months after the original S3 was launched and only a couple of weeks after the iPhone 5 debuted.
The S3 mini has a smaller 4-inch screen but overall looks very similar to its larger namesake.
Apple’s iPhone 5 also has a 4-inch screen but the two phones are reported to be very different from each other. S3 Mini display is 800×400 (233 pixels per inch), while the iPhone 5 display is 1,136×640 (326 pixels per inch). In addition, the S3 Mini lacks 4G LTE networking, which the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 both support.
Apart from screen size, the S3 Mini has most features of the Galaxy S3. The mini is powered by 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest version of Android operating system, featuring a 1GHz dual-core processor.
“The Galaxy S3 introduced a new concept of smartphone that has proven hugely popular around the world. We’re now delighted to bring its revolutionary design, intuitive usability and intelligence to the Galaxy S3 mini in a more compact form,” said Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung’s IT & mobile communications division.
