A hybrid of natural grass and artificial fibres is set to save the day for the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg, as it prepares to host the Africa Cup of Nations in January and February.
The FNB Stadium is set to host the opening ceremony and match on January 19 as well as the final and closing ceremony on February 10, but the pitch deteriorated after American rock band Linkin Park held a concert in the stadium and a match between the Kaizer Chiefs and the Moroka Swallows.
“The pitch is not going to be in a bad condition before the final,” assured Mvuzo Mbebe local organising committee Chief Executive.
Despite the Confederation of African football rejecting goal line technology, Desso GrassMaster – a hybrid of natural grass and artificial fibres – is a technology that will be planted on the field to lessen the damage caused to the pitch.
The Desso Grassmaster technology is necessary for the preservation of the field since another concert will be taking place at the stadium at the same time as the tournament.
