Global ICT solutions leader Huawei has said it will offset the bills of nine children at Kenya’s major referral hospital, the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), as part of its Christmas corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities.
The children, who are ailing from a host of illnesses including meningitis, cancer and pneumonia from poor backgrounds, will enjoy private healthcare services at the national referral hospital that was out of their reach.
According to Huawei Chief Executive, Wind Li, the settling of the bills totaling KSh1 million (approx. $11650) will go a long way in bringing happiness to the children’s families as the company continues to engage in activities that enrich the lives of Kenyans.
“We appreciate this opportunity to share Huawei benefits to these children who can now enjoy Christmas with their families. As a member of the UN global combat, Huawei is committed to partnerships that will enhance the achievement of the UN millennium development goals on health and child mortality as part of our corporate citizenship efforts as we approach the 2015 deadline,” Li said.
KNH Chief Executive Richard Lesiyampe said the hospital continues to see increased demand putting pressure on available resources. He urged other companies to join in helping less fortunate children.
Huawei is a key player in Kenya’s smartphone market having sold 130,000 units of its IDEOS brand and is also dominant on its modem segment sold through its partners Safaricom and Orange Kenya.
