Blue Coat introduces mobile security feature for iPhones

Blue Coat, an online security firm, has introduced security feature branded Blue Coat Mobile Device Security (MDS) service for the iOS platform, enabling business users to guard against security threats in the mobile Web and application industry.

“Mobile devices are game changing for the enterprise, but today, users on those devices are almost completely unprotected against Web-based threats and inadvertent data loss from unmanaged mobile browser applications,” Justin Lee, country manager for South Africa at Blue Coat Systems, said.

He added that the Blue Coat Mobile Device Security service “seamlessly extends the industry’s leading threat protection and policy controls from the corporate network to mobile devices, to give businesses the confidence that their users and data are protected.”

More business are allowing their employees to use their own devices in completing some of their functions such as accessing files, sending and receiving corporate emails. This is a progressive shift although it poses threats to the sensitive company information.

“As businesses move to fully embrace mobile devices in their extended corporate environment, they need to overcome three real risks: Exposure to Web-based threats, inadvertent data loss via native mobile and mobile browser applications, and employees circumventing corporate security policies,” the company stated.

It is estimated there will be about 50 billion devices with IP addresses and connected to the Internet by the year 2020, meaning more business and personal information as well as gadgets would be remotely accessible.
