Nigerian defence chief hits out at fake Facebook account

Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, has confirmed there is a parody Facebook account in his name and has labelled the imitators cyber criminals.

The Facebook account, with the name ‘Chief of Defence Staff’, used the official picture of Ibrahim.

A Defence Headquarters statement read: “The general public is hereby warned that the Chief of Defence Staff or Defence Headquarters does not operate any official Facebook account or page. Any person who transacts any business or makes any comment in the said fake Facebook account does so at his or her own risk.”

According to the spokesperson of the Nigerian Defence Headquarters, the individuals behind the creation of the page are carrying out criminal acts.

On what the Defence HQ is doing to rectify the anomaly and bring perpetrators to justice, he said: “Effort is being made to trace and bring the perpetrators to book. This [public service announcement] is for the awareness of the general public.”

The Facebook account has already been taken down.

HumanIPO reported in November the Senate of Nigeria’s National Assembly was discussing legislation to help deal with cybercrime.
