MTN, Ghana’s leading mobile operator, has unveiled a new ICT centre for Ghana’s College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) which it hopes will improve health care.
With the facilities at the centre, doctors, especially residents and fellows of the college in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale, now have unique access.
Michael Ikpoki, Chief Executive of MTN, said: “The main purpose of the facility is to promote a more collaborative and reference centre for surgeons and physicians through the use of advanced ICT, which promotes best practices in the medical field.”
It is also intended to promote and enhance telemedicine innovation in Ghana’s healthcare industry.
Costing GH¢ 340,000 (US$180,000), the centre is part of MTN Ghana Foundation’s major Corporate Social Investment and part of the project is the transformation of the server room to a data center well equipped with servers, storage systems, cooling systems, fire suppression, power systems and environmental monitoring devices. The centre also has an ultra-modern video conferencing system.
“We expect that more than 3,000 medical practitioners would benefit from the facility and would have an easy access to information and share digital communication experience with colleagues and professionals within the country and outside the country,” Ikpoki added.
Professor Marian Addy, Chairperson of the Council of the GCPS, appreciated MTN’s gesture and reiterated the commitment of the college to fostering the current working relationship between both parties.
