Dina Pule calls on South African ICT industry to contribute to policy making

The South African government has signed up 22 industry experts to advise Dina Pule, the Minister of Communications, on future ICT policy.

Pule is currently working towards bringing a Green Paper to government on Integrated National ICT Policy.

The Policy Review Panel, which will meet for the first time in January, includes Calvo Mawela, General Manager of Regulatory Affairs at MWEB, Lehlohonolo Letele, Group Chief Executive of Multichoice and Lucky Masilela, Chairperson of Nokia Siemens Network.

Pule said: “It is humbling to receive the amount of support that we are getting from society and the industry as we seek to overhaul the ICT Policy landscape in our country.

“It is a great act of patriotism that so many people answered our request for their time and their expertise. A lot of the respondents are people that we have worked with before and they bring a wealth of experience to our processes.”

The panel will be divided into the six focus areas: broadcasting, telecommunications and information technology, postal, content development, digitising government, and investment and manufacturing.

The group are expected to meet four times next year.

“We are now a step close to developing the ICT policies that will make the country competitive and bring millions of South Africans into the knowledge and information society,” added Pule.
