Kenya’s top search on Google this year has been its electoral body, the Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission (IEBC), as the country readies for its first election under its new constitution.
When it came to the searches on “How to…”, the most searched was ‘How to abort’, with there also being queries on how to drift, conceive, study, seduce, type, romance, invest, and, lastly, how to geek.
The “What is” query was dominated by ethnicity and illnesses such as cancer, ebola, HIV/AIDS, typhoid, malaria, and stress. The Kenyans love for Spanish telenovelas was revealed in the Entertainment searches with “Eva Luna” and “Triumph of Love” leading while “BBA,” “Stargame,” “Shuga” and “KulaHappy” gained more popularity.
Kenyans also went online to find more information on famous personalities, with politicians dominating, including the late veteran politicians Njenga Karume, George Saitoti and John Michuki, who created legacies through their public service. Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s former adviser Miguna Miguna and aspiring presidential candidate Peter Kenneth were also prominent.
Google announced these top searches for 55 countries in the world via its Global Zeitgeist website, which was launched on December 12, 2012 to host all 838 top-ten lists from the 55 countries. The website also allows visitors to compare terms through interactive data visualization.
Global Zeitgeist (German for “the spirit of the times”) was arrived through an exploration of the billions of search queries that the search giant receives each year.
