Kenyans to write one million letters to God by mid-January 2013

An initiative aiming to connect Kenyans to God is seeking to mobilise Kenyans, through its portal Writetogod.co.ke, to write over one million letters to God by mid- January 2013.

The portal is looking “to provide a platform for individuals in Kenya to create positive change and have good wishes and peaceful thoughts for the world by connecting to God”.

Writetogod.co.ke is supported by Google Country Manager Joseph Mucheru and Nizar Juma, Chairman at Jubilee Holdings, as well as religious bodies.

Kirui Mburathi, an architect of the initiative, said they are targeting 4 to 5 million Kenyans to take participate.

“We have activated a couple of platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, so that people will be able to write to God in different platforms,” he explained.

Letter-writers can compose their letter straight on the portal, while an SMS system is also planned whereby people can send their prayers in text message formats.

Samantha Fraser, an educator, supports the idea of writing prayers as it can be documented and shared among people.

“What we are finding out is that people are writing about the same things. And this is creating a bridge between tribes, cultures, ages and what it is showing is that Kenya has one voice,” she said.

Juma said: “I think it is a good initiative through which many people will come together in Kenya. The timing is good. People are hoping for peaceful elections.”

About 4,550 letters were already written as per the time of publication of this article.
