GGD celebrates 8th birthday

International initiative Girl Geek Dinners (GGD) is celebrating its eighth anniversary, inviting all tech-interested females for a get-together.

A Europe Campus Party is to take place in London at the Yahoo! offices tonight (Thursday), with English founder Sarah Lamb the guest speaker.

Lamb began the initiative in 2005 after spotting the gap in technology events for females.

Since its launch, the event has spread to 126 cities in more than 21 countries.

Mariska du Preez took the event to South Africa approximately two years ago, with Suhaifa Naidoo recently taking over the position of chairperson.

HumanIPO reported last month on Girl Geek Dinners Cape Town (GGDCPT) hosting female tech role models to give advice on securing a digital job.

Speaking to HumanIPO, Lamb said: “My major highlight from this last year has to be speaking at a United Nations (UN) conference and mentoring 12 young entrepreneurs.”

She also mentioned the growth of the event in emerging countries, especially those where education is not accessible to women.

Lamb also revealed plans to bring all the groups together on a single website to keep updated with news, events and information.

“We’d love to improve the number of young people choosing to take degree courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and we’d like to grow our jobs board to help our members to find great jobs with companies that really want women on their teams,” she said.
