Nigeria is under-utilizing its space technology and satellites – expert

Nigeria is yet to enjoy the full benefits of its massive investment in various satellites, according to Dr Spencer Onuh, director of Nigeria’s Centre for Satellite Technology Development (CSTD).

Onuh, speaking in Nigeria’s capital city Abuja, said Nigerian government agencies are still reluctant to embrace the potentials of space technology.

“We have not been able to maximise them. Why? Because we need to work with the number of agencies, which are not still free to embrace our stretched hands.

“Even when we say ‘look we can do this and that for you’, they are not coming in fully, they are
coming with a little bit of hesitations,” he said.

He reiterated the need for federal and state governments, ministries, departments and agencies to engage satellite technologies in their operations. He said with space technology they can be assured of all round success.

“The good thing is that it is not even as expensive when compared to buying the technology from outside, and the benefit that will accrue to you from it is in sequential form. Even if you are not sure on whether we have the technology you need, talk to us and we will advise you appropriately. Whatever image you want to process, we have the capability and capacity in Nigeria,” he said.

He also requested the support of all Nigerians in advancing the nation using space technology. He stressed the need to introduce satellite applications to primary and secondary schools, polytechnics and universities.

He concluded by urging the government and all stakeholders to work together to resolve any conflict which may prevent the maximization of the benefits embedded in space technology.
