Twitter verifies Kenyan government accounts following attacks

Twitter has verified two Kenyan government accounts following the attack by Westgate shopping mall by Al-Shabaab.

The accounts include those held by the Kenyan police, @policeke, and its parent ministry, @interiorke.

The new verification adds to the number of accounts held by the government that can be taken as credible by followers on Twitter, with others including @immigrationke, which delivers news and updates relating to immigration issues in the East African country, and the president’s account - @UKenyatta.

Other verified accounts include that of interior cabinet secretary Joseph Ole Lenku @joelenku and

Director Digital,New Media &Diaspora. Executive Office of the President Dennis Ole Itumbi @oleitumbi.

The accounts have been instrumental in providing information following the attack, which has been followed all over the world.

Key government accounts remain unverified including that run by the Kenya Defence Force, that have been providing relevant information relating to the attacks.

Other accounts held by prominent Kenyans that have been verified include the former prime minister Raila Odinga, former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka, presidential aspirant Martha Karua and football star Victor Wanyama.
