The government of Kano state in northern Nigeria has announced its readiness to establish 44 e-learning centres this year.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the commissioner for education in the state Tajuddeen Gambo said the government would establish one e-learning centre in each of the state’s 44 local government areas.
Gambo said the project is aimed at encouraging e-learning and would prepare the state for the electronic conduct of examinations by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) from next year.
“By 2015, JAMB examination is going to be done electronically. So you have to ensure that all your students taking the examination are computer literate otherwise they will not pass the examination,” Gambo said.
He said each of the e-learning centres would have a minimum of 30 computers, while the government is also planning to provide e-learning facilities for 100 secondary schools in the state, each of which would receive 61 computers from the state government.
He said: “Computer study is now compulsory in all our secondary schools from this year, hence the decision to provide the facilities.
“The state government has awarded contract worth NGN65 million (US$400,000) for the e-learning programme at the Governor’s College in Kano under its pilot project. The project would later be extended to First Lady’s College and all the science and technical colleges across the state.”
