The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has launched a new service allowing students awaiting their matriculation (matric) examination results tomorrow to register to receive their personal results via SMS.

With the Department of Basic Education confirming matric results will be available from 6pm tonight, and individual results from tomorrow, the SABC is providing an SMS line for students who wish to receive their results directly to their mobile phones.

Students can register by sending their ID number and exam number to 35658 at a cost of ZAR3 (US$0.28) per SMS.

They will then receive their results via text when they become public tomorrow.

In addition to the SMS line, results will be announced this evening by the minister of basic education and will be available at examination centres, in newspapers, and via online media and the departmental website.

HumanIPO has reported on the introduction of mobile phone-based exam results across Africa, with the service proving particularly popular in Kenya after the country’s education ministry made Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results available via mobile phones last year.

Shortly after the results service was launched, Kenyan KCPE students were also able to check intake into secondary schools via mobile.
