The executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business Lee Young Hee has said the company will release its Galaxy S5 smartphone by April, which may include eye scanner technology for the first time.

Lee told Bloomberg the company was preparing the latest in the Galaxy series to compete with Apple’s iPhone, and it will be paired with a new wearable device along the lines of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

“We’ve been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time,” Lee said. “When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved.”

He said Samsung was adding new features and models to compete with Apple, and that at least one more wearable device would be released this year.

“Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology,” Lee told the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. “We are studying the possibility but can’t really say whether we will have it or not on the S5.”
