African tech companies Econet, Liquid Telecom and MTN South Africa have been shortlisted for the inaugural Telecom.com Industry Awards, putting them up against global telecom giants.
“The Telecoms.com Awards honour industry excellence in everything from the most ground-breaking advances in network technology and services delivered over those networks, front line innovations in customer service, enterprise cloud offerings and the use of green technology,” said the tech media providers in a statement.
Zimbabwean telecoms provider Econet, in conjunction with Mahindra Comviva, has been shortlisted in the “Best Mobile Financial Service” category for creating Ecocash, a mobile banking platform for sending cash, buying prepaid airtime and paying for services and goods.
In the “Pushing the Limits Fixed” category Liquid Telecoms has been nominated for creating the Africa’s largest single fibre network.
The company is a data, voice and IP provider, servicing eastern, central and southern Africa.

South African mobile network MTN has been nominated in the “Customer Experience Management (CEM)” category for its work with WDS, a Xerox company, on the smartphone tool.
The awards will take place on February 24, 2014 during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
