The Central Operations Centre of the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has been evacuated amidst security concerns following the discovery of a “suspicious” envelope containing white powder.
The building was shut down in response to the find, workers evacuated, electricity shut off and the Tshwane Hazardous Material Unit alerted.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety of the people who work at the COC,” said Vusi Mona, spokesperson for SANRAL.
“We take this matter very seriously and condemn this type of action in the strongest possible terms. It is tantamount to sabotage and borders on a very serious crime.”
SANRAL said the incident will cause disruption to the Gauteng e-toll system and apologised in advance to motorists for the disruption to be caused.
HumanIPO asked for clarification on how road users will be affected, but SANRAL declined to explain.
The Agency also declined to comment on what the substance turned out to be.
