Bharti Airtel Africa appoints new MD

Bharti Airtel has appointed Christian de Faria as managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) for Africa, giving him responsibility for the company’s operations in 17 African countries.

De Faria previously held a number of roles at MTN Group.

Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel holding company Bharti Enterprises has elevated former Airtel Africa boss Manoj Kohli to the position of managing director (MD), overseeing all of the group’s non-telecom businesses.

HumanIPO reported early last year on Kohli’s appointment as Bharti Airtel MD in order to revive the company’s mobile business.

As part of the latest reshuffle, with appointments effective from April 1, Gopal Vittal, current Bharti Airtel joint MD and chief executive officer (CEO) for India), has become MD for India and South Asia, with the Bangladesh and Sri Lanka businesses of Airtel now falling under South Asia operations.

Akhil Gupta becomes chairman of Bharti Infratel and vice-chairman of Bharti Enterprises.

“The new structure reflects the next phase of Bharti’s growth journey, which will be led by best-in-class professionals in various segments,” said Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of Bharti Enterprises.

Meanwhile, Airtel Kenya has appointed Charles Wanjohi as its marketing director.
