MTN Uganda has raised its charges for payment of bills via mobile money to Umeme Electricity and National Water and Sewerage Corporation, meaning customers who use mobile money to pay for water and electricity will have to pay more.

According to MTN Uganda chief marketing officer Ernest Fonternel, the increases in charges were caused by the reluctance of utility companies to pay MTN for the transactions.

“The companies no longer pay us for the collection of their monies. So we recoup our share from the customer,” he said.

The increments are between USh80 and USh140 and will take place from this month.
