Facebook computers targeted in sophisticated possible Java exploit hack attack

Facebook has reported it was the target of a sophisticated hack attack that possibly used the “Java exploit” by an unidentified hacker group.

Facebook was quick to point out in a statement that based on its investigations no user information was compromised or leaked during the attack.

Facebook Security said: “This attack occurred when a handful of employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised. The compromised website hosted an exploit which then allowed malware to be installed on these employee laptops. The laptops were fully-patched and running up-to-date anti-virus software.

“As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day.”

Although Facebook has not disclosed if the attacks were a result of the zero-day Java exploit, many reports suggested so also given the recent attack on Twitter which compromised 250,000 user accounts.

With the Twitter attack, hackers got access to user information including user names and email addresses.
