South African president Jacob Zuma has authorised the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate the award of a digital migration public awareness tender by the Department of Communications (DoC) to Media Corner.
The presidency said the SIU would investigate “certain matters relating to the affairs of the Department of Communications”.
In particular, the SIU is to look into the validity of the contract granted to Media Corner for services to raise public awareness of the digital migration process, the presidency said, as well as the validity of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between the DoC and Media Corner.
The president asked the SIU to uncover any “unauthorised, irregular or fruitless and wasteful expenditure” relating to the award of the contract.
Furthermore, the SIU is to establish the roles of various DoC employees in the award of the contract, and to determine whether any unlawful or improper conduct took place on the part of employees.
