IBM is committing itself to come up with more commercially viable solutions in the African continent, according to Dr Khamal Bhattacharya, director of IBM research in Africa.

During his presentation on IBM’s future at the IBM BusinessConnect event in Nairobi, Bhattacharya said systems of engagement, insight and record would be used to drive growth.

“We are creating solutions that are commercially viable, not for social responsibility” said Bhattacharya.

He also emphasised the need to introduce next era cognitive computing.

“Africa’s strategic opportunity is in being an early adapter of the next era cognitive computer,” he said.

It emerged in the presentation that Watson will be given the ability to see and reason, with Bhattacharya saying it presents the best solution to issues related to agriculture, financial inclusion, education and public health issues.

IBM is currently working on mobile finance cloud and a cancer register system as well as traffic and actionable operations.
