Orange Kenya in conjunction with innovations group Infonet will power the free Wi-Fi project in Nakuru, the first of its kind in the country.

HumanIPO reported yesterday Nakuru had become the first town in Kenya to become a free Wi-Fi zone through a partnership between the State House Digital Team and the Nakuru county government, making it the third city in Africa to undertake such a project after Kigali, Rwanda, and Cape Town, South Africa, respectively.

Orange chief executive officer (CEO) Mickael Ghossein sayid the provision of free wireless internet to counties across the country will help in making them more accessible for business, as well as assist the county governments in improving their service offering through integrated ICT solutions.

“The launch of this initiative by the Nakuru County Government and the State House Digital team is in line with Orange’s strategy of enhancing the use of its infrastructure to offer value added Data & Voice solutions to the counties,” said Orange in a press release.

The Wi-Fi will work within a 10 kilometre radius, in the first phase, covering Nakuru Town’s Central Business District (CBD) and there will be seven base stations spread across the CBD from where users will be allowed 24-hour unlimited data usage.

The county government expects to extend this to other parts of Nakuru progressively.
