The government of Lagos state, Nigeria, has expressed concerns over inaccurate lists of telecoms masts submitted by operators in the state, threatening to impose fines on networks refusing to submit accurate information.
Joe Igbokwe, general manager at the state’s Urban Furniture Regulatory Unit (UFRU), said: “The state government is worried by the discrepancies in the figures of masts submitted by some of the operators and the refusal of other operators to submit any list.”
He said the UFRU would number all telecoms masts in the state.
“Any operator whose figure varies from the actual number of masts it operates in Lagos would attract a penalty of NGN5 million (US$30,000) per mast,” he said.
He urged the networks to be honest with their lists of telecoms masts in Lagos, and announced that from May 1 the state government would begin to decommission all hollow type masts and towers following the recent collapse of a hollow type communications mast belonging to Access Bank, located in its Idimu branch in Agege, Lagos.
