The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has granted three new commercial free-to-air (FTA) sound broadcasting services licences.
The regulator said it has finalised the licensing process for the primary market – or medium wave market – and decided on which applications to grant.
TalkSport Radio and LM Radio in Gauteng received licences, as well as Magic 828 in Cape Town, ICASA said.
However, applications by S.L.A.M Gauteng and Capital Radio in Gauteng, S.L.A.M KZN in Durban, and S.L.A.M Western Cape in Cape Town were rejected.
The regulator said it received a total of seven applications for licences since it first published the invitation to apply on February 2, 2012.
Reasons for the rejected applications are available on ICASA’s website, or in person at the ICASA library in Johannesburg.
