South African mobile operator MTN is amending its roaming charges, allowing its prepaid and contract customers to communicate while travelling at reduced rates.
“One of the biggest concerns people have when travelling abroad is how much they will have to pay for phone calls, SMSs, and accessing the internet while roaming. The dreaded bill shock when returning home has severely impacted how people stay in touch,” said Brian Gouldie, chief marketing officer (CMO) at MTN South Africa.
The company said when visiting countries in which it operates its customers will pay ZAR2.50 a minute for voice calls, ZAR0.75 per SMS, ZAR2 a megabyte and ZAR2.50 to receive calls from home.
Customers will be charged ZAR5 per minute to call back home and other international destinations.
“While it is a proudly South African organisation, MTN has expand significantly over the past 20 years to now have an extensive footprint across the continent. This offering provides our customers with easy access to a bold new digital world,” said Gouldie.
The new price plan applies to any device on the MTN network, including smartphones, tablets and laptops.
“Customers just need to ensure that they are roaming on the MTN network when in a country that has an MTN presence otherwise normal roaming rates will apply,” the company said.
