Kenyan supermarket firm Nakumatt is urging mobile subscribers to share terror alert messages responsibly while at the same time assuring its customers of increased security at all its branches after a message went viral urging friends and family to steer clear of shopping malls as they were possible targets.
The source of the message is unknown, and though the supermarket said it cannot confirm the veracity of the claims, they cannot discount them either and will treat them seriously.
Nakumatt’s store in Westgate, Nairobi was heavily damaged by the attacks at the mall in September last year.
“We also wish to request all mobile subscribers to exercise personal responsibility when sharing SMSs and related social media messages to avoid causing unnecessary panic. Ideally, such messages should, also be shared with the relevant security agencies to facilitate proper,” said managing director Atul Shah.
“We are collaborating fully with all security agencies to ensure maximum-security measures and procedures are, maintained across our branch network. On this score, we are grateful that the National Police Service has seconded plain clothed and uniformed armed units to our respective branches and malls that we operate in; countrywide.”
Customers, suppliers and all other stakeholders have been asked to accord security personnel and safety marshals the necessary support when called upon in addition to adhering to any security directions provided whilst within our premises.
