Tunisia’s mobile telecom market will reach US$1.7 billion in terms of revenue by 2017, according to a report by technology researcher Pyramid Research.
Pyramid Research, which did a study on the country’s telecom sector, projects a three percent growth between 2013 and 2017, for the sector to be at that level of growth.
“Fixed voice, although declining slowly, will remain important in the overall Tunisia telecommunications market. At the same time, mobile voice, despite being the largest revenue generating segment, will stagnate,” the research firm stated.
In 2012, the total mobile voice service accounted for 71 percent of revenue, and is expected to decline to 62 percent by 2017.
According to the research company, the mobile data sector will be the fastest growing sector in the next five years. Between 2012 and 2017, the sector in Tunisia will grow profits from US$167 million to US$362 million. All the three mobile operators in the country, including Tunisie Telecom (Tunicell), Tunisiana and Orange Tunisie, are fighting over the mobile data arena aggressively.
According to another study by Budde Research, Tunisia had a mobile penetration of 117 percent by end of last year. Pyramid has put the number at 119 percent, which is expected to climb to 135 percent by 2017.
The mobile subscription in the country now stands at 12.7 million and is expected to jump to 15 million in five years’ time.
The Pyramid Research’s report stated that the three mobile operators are expected to aggressively expand their offering, particularly data, with the help of government initiatives.
