MTN has announced it will soon begin to deliver electricity supplies to its subscribers in Nigeria who are residing in rural areas not connected to the national power grid.
The service, which will be delivered through the Nova-Lumos service, provides power using a solar panel and indoor unit that allows MTN customers to subscribe to alternative electricity on demand using their mobile phone.
Nova Lumos in partnership with MTN Nigeria secured funding from the GSMA’s Mobile Enabled Community Services (MECS) Innovation Grant Fund with the support of the UK government.
Michael Ikpoki, MTN Nigeria chief executive officer (CEO), said: “By paying for usage only in small payments, the same way our customers purchase airtime and other mobile services, MTN and Nova-Lumos will offer an innovative and widely-accessible service for all MTN customers.”
He said the first Nova-Lumos systems will be be available soon to the general public through MTN service points, adding an announcement about the system’s availability will soon be made by the network.
