The inception of a small and medium enterprise (SME) department is likely, the national chairperson of South African ruling party the African National Congress (ANC) Baleka Mbete has said, according to a report.
“We are talking about a focused department looking at small and medium businesses because the departments must be about addressing specific challenges in society,” the South African Press Association (SAPA) quotes her as saying.
Mbete said a space needs to be created where SMEs could be assisted and encouraged.
“We know that in spite of having a trade and industry department for all these years… they have been unable to pay enough attention to small businesses on the ground,” she said.
She said the ANC is open-minded and flexible to a departmental discussion.
