South African radio personality Gareth Cliff will be hosting a breakfast show on Comedy Central Africa from May 1, expanding his reach beyond the soon to be launched WeChat radio show CliffCentral.
HumanIPO reported last week Cliff had plans to launch an unscripted and uncensored radio show over the messaging application WeChat.
Explaining the reason for the choice of medium, Cliff said traditional radio was going to die and he wanted to hold the funeral.
The radio personality will now also branch out into television, with his breakfast show being aired every weekday between 7:35 and 8:50am CAT.
According to Comedy Central the show will feature “calls, live interviews and a cheeky sideways look at the day’s news stories from Cliff’s new ‘CliffCentral.com’ project, helped along by Cliff’s regular posse of collaborators including Damon Kalvari, Leigh-Ann Mol, Mabale Moloi and Siya Sangweni-Fynn”.
“With the dramatic changes in the broadcast landscape in a relatively short period of time, people are already listening to radio everywhere except on the radio, with online being the frontrunner. The partnership with Comedy Central not only gives our audience a traditional platform to join us as they’re getting ready to start the day, but is an opportunity to uncover fresh local content in a way that has never been done before in South Africa – reality radio!” said Cliff.
According to Evert van der Veer, head of Comedy Central Africa, the show will be the channel’s first daily live show.
“The addition of a localised editorial voice to put things in perspective for SA viewers adds a broad new dimension to our comedy portfolio,” he said.
