Court documents claim Pinnacle executive bribed police

Court documents filed this week have revealed the extent of Pinnacle Holdings’ executive Takalani Tshivhase alleged attempts to secure a ZAR1.6 billion (US$151 million) tender by bribing a police officer, according to a report.

Business Day reports Tshivhase offered Lieutenant-General Bonginkosi Ngubane at the South African Police Service (SAPS) ZAR5 million (US$473,000) to secure a tender for Maxid/MaxID only after more subtle offerings.

The company is also under investigation by the Financial Services Board for possible insider trading by its directors.

“[Tshivhase] said he had a house in George, and if I wanted to stay there during the December period I was welcome to use it. I did not accept Tshivhase’s offer,” Ngubane is quoted as saying in a sworn statement.

“[Tshivhase said that] if I allowed certain things to happen, it will be financially beneficial to me. Tshivhase then went on and offered me an amount of ZAR5m if I ensured the SA Police Service procured the remaining 3,000 Max ID terminals from Pinnacle through him,” he said.

Ngubane later reported the issue to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).

HumanIPO reported last week Tshivhase – who is currently on an approved leave of absence – had his court date postponed to July after a court appearance.
