The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has provisionally granted broadcasting licences to five subscription television broadcasters, following public hearings in July last year.
In 2012 the regulator issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for individual and commercial subscription broadcasting licences, to which it received five applications.
The regulator said the five companies granted licences are Close-T Broadcast Network Holdings, Mindset Media Enterprises, Mobile TV, Kagiso TV and Siyaya Free To Air.
“Although the conditions imposed are specific to each of the five applicants, they generally relate to amongst others, confirmation of equity ownership, funding requirements, further research, confirmation of local content and programming content agreements,” ICASA said.
It said the applicants have three months to comply with the conditions set out by ICASA.
