The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has condemned a fake Twitter account in the name of acting chief operations officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said Motsoeneng does not have a Twitter account and thus the imposter – who is posting Tweets that conflict with the SABC view on a number of issues – should be disregarded.
“The SABC condemns the actions of an imposter who is masquerading on the social media platform, Twitter, as Mr Motsoeneng. We view this matter in a serious light as this is just not a violation of Mr Motsoeneng’s rights and identity theft, but it affects the SABC as the organisation that Mr Motsoeneng represents,” he said.
“Both Motsoeneng and the SABC will make an application to all the relevant law enforcement institutions to discard the existing Twitter account under his name.”
Motsoeneng has been a controversial figure at the SABC.
Earlier this year South African public protector Thuli Mandonsela condemned his appointment, saying it was irregular and based on fraudulent claims by Motsoeneng he had passed matriculation exams.
Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma has appointed Leah Thabisile Khumalo as a non-executive director of the SABC board, effective until September 24, 2018, as replacement for Noluthando Gosa, who resigned in November last year.
“We wish her all the best in this critical task of executing the country’s public broadcasting mandate,” said Zuma.
