Fibre cuts on the rise in Ghana’s western region – Airtel

Airtel Ghana has expressed concern over the rise in fibre optic cable cuts in the country, especially in the western region.

According to the company’s network planning engineer Raymond Folley, cutting of the telecoms company’s fibre was on the ascendency in the western region of Ghana, particularly in Tarkwa, a gold mining city.

He said fibre cable cuts occur during road constructions and through the activities of vandals, who believe they can obtain valuable copper from the cut cables.

“Some of these challenges result in the disruption of communications services to the general public,” Folley said.

He said land litigation, higher rent charges and reluctance of some communities in having telecom masts located close to their neighbourhoods had lowered the rapid deployment of telecom masts across the country.

However, the company’s head of corporate communications, Donald Gwira, said the company would continue investing despite the cuts.
