Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has unveiled a new Kenya Law website, which includes present and past publications of the Kenya Gazette and allows the public to access information on their cases, including court dates.
The site is the first of its kind in Africa, and according to Mutunga will also enable judicial officers to get a grasp of their mandate and have orderly courts.
“The new website is a transformation of the judicial institution and a boost to their reforms process,” Mutunga said.
“We have come to an enlightened understanding of our mandate and made a commitment to not merely be a provider of public legal information but the people’s fountain of knowledge and understanding of the law for the promotion of the rule of law and advancement of a civilized society.
“The accessibility of the Kenya Gazette online will further ensure that Kenyans are kept up to date in regard to all legislations in the country.”
Speaking at the launch, chief registrar of the Judiciary (CRJ) Anne Amadi said disabled people can also access the website.
“The establishment of this website has been an involving process; we have given a place to the less privileged to assist in its creation,” said Amadi.
“This mode of creation has been significant as we used the same people who need it to create it as such they create it in a way that they can understand it.”
Long’et Terer, acting chief executive officer (CEO) at Kenya Law, said the website will soon have a Kiswahili version.
