Kenyan internet service provider (ISP) Zuku has announced the investment of KSh40 million (US$460,000) towards the modernisation of its network infrastructure to ensure a 50Mbps internet service, the fastest residential service offering in the market.
The company is also targeting a value proposition critical to customer use and enjoyment with the new service it said promises speed and reliability.
The offering will be piloted to 100 customers in areas such as Runda, Spring Valley and Karen, and deployed on the company’s latest high capacity fibre optic network technology, with full rollout expected by August to more customers.
Wananchi Group chief executive officer (CEO) Richard Alden said: “Kenyans are now demanding more speeds, and this demand has fuelled our overall broadband strategy by revamping our internet offering. Not only are we now delivering the fastest speed today, but our infrastructure has the capacity to support even higher speeds as demand and usage grows.”
Kenya’s national broadband strategy outlines a stable connectivity with high connection speeds of up to 40Mbps in urban areas and 5Mbps in rural areas by 2017.
“We are glad that we have set the pace offering 50Mbps, speeds which now allow Internet users to enjoy seamless data, voice and video, services which are classified as imperative towards the economic development of the country using ICT,” said Alden.
The move comes as the company continues to expand its residential network across key counties, with the process currently ongoing in Mombasa.
Zuku anticipates connecting over 100,000 homes in Mombasa to the high capacity fibre optic network.
