Leading Kenyan operator Safaricom has settled a court case with local musician JB Maina, agreeing to pay KSh15.5 million (US$180,000) over the use of 10 of his songs for ringtones in its Skiza Tunes and Surf2Win promotion.

Rap Nairobi reports Kenya’s High Court last year directed the company to stop selling and storing Maina’s songs and allow the musician to be able to make copies of all purchases and sales records pertaining to his songs, which Maina said did not take place.

The settlement is to paid within 21 days, failure to which the parties will head back to court.

Safaricom had denied the charges, saying it had signed a content provision agreement with Interactive Media Services and Liberty Afrika Technologies.
