The Rwandan Ministry of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Affairs (MIDIMAR) is launching a service involving the use of SMS in alerting the public about looming disasters.
Jean Baptiste Nsengiyumva, director of research and public awareness at the ministry, said it would soon be possible for people to receive messages from the Rwanda Meteorology Agency warning them of disasters earlier so they can vacate areas if need be.
The service will also help government agencies in charge of intervention respond to the crisis in time.
“We hope the new project will help reduce the damage and possible consequences. We are working with other partners to implement the project,” Nsengiyumva said.
