Nigerian Communication Satellite (NigComSat) is underfunded and needs US$600 million to be effective and capable of ensuring security in Nigeria, according to deputy general manager of technical Danjuma Ndihgihdah.
Ndihgihdah told the National Conference’s Committee on Science and Technology lack of funds had greatly affected NigComSat’s operations.
“Insecurity all over the world is taking a new dimension and increasingly by the day. Criminals, terrorists, kidnappers and other miscreants in the society are using advance methods to accomplish their aims,” he said. “In order to combat the activities of these miscreants, governments worldwide are taking serious steps by providing secure, private and common communication systems for their security operatives.”
He said NigComSat along with its partner Netlink Technologies had made a lot of progress towards the provision of security communications as a service, and when fully functional would help ministries and government agencies with secure networks instead of leasing capacity from international vendors.
