South African technology firm Samsung has announced it will be no longer be supplying notebooks to the South African region, instead focusing on “solutions that are aligned with the evolution of the technology market and the changing end user demands”.
The company plans to focus on the mobile industry, which according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) grew by 107 per cent year-on-year in the final quarter of 2013 compared with the 18 per cent decline in the PC market during the same period.
“Tablets are increasingly being favoured locally, therefore Samsung is taking a targeted approach to offer feature-rich technology ecosystems to meet consumer needs,” said Craige Fleischer, director of mobile communications at Samsung Electronics South Africa.
“Changes in the mobile market offer us the opportunity refine our product offering. Samsung is well positioned to deliver innovative solutions that meet the needs of South Africans.”
Samsung said this shift is in due to the increased sophistication consumers desire in their devices.
“The professional consumer, or ‘prosumer’, now expects flexibility, mobility, power and the ability to switch between work and play environments with great ease,” it said.
The company said consumers want to be able to seamlessly access their business and personal information on their devices.
