IEBC admits electronic voter registration failure

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says it is experienced failures in its electronic voter registration processes as Kenyans vote at 34,000 polling stations across the country.

IEBC chairman Issack Hassan asked Kenyans to remain calm as the hitches are resolved during a statement from the Bomas of Kenya national tallying centre.

There were delays in the opening of some polling stations, as well as problems with voter identification and voting material. Hassan said delays in the opening of polling stations would be made up later today, while the electronic poll-book has been discarded in favour of printed registers and voter photos.

The elections are the first since 2007, when a disputed result saw the country descend into ethnic violence. Elections in four County Assembly wards have to be delayed until March 11, while isolated cases of violence have been reported in Kakamega County and Mombasa.
