Event mapping website Uchaguzi has at the time of writing documented 770 incident reports from members of the public during the Kenyan elections, though reports of violence, hate speech and incitement are limited.
The platform is being actively used in a bid to ensure thorough reporting of election-related violence as well as peace efforts, as Kenyans continue to queue to cast their ballots.
Of the reports, 173 are listed under the “positive events” category, most of which are sub-listed as “everything is fine”.
The majority of reports highlighting problems focus on irregularities in the voting process, including bribing of voters, failure to assist illiterate voters and the lack of voting materials.
Meanwhile there are also reports of staffing and logistical problems at polling stations, as well as substantial numbers of complaints about the biometric voter registration system which appears to be experiencing problems across the country, with many voter registrations having been lost.
Reports of violence, hate speech and incitement are limited; with the majority of this nature of report falling into the “threat of violence” category.
