Leading Kenyan telecoms company Safaricom is finalising a deal that will see it contracted by the government to develop a KSh14 billion (US$160 million) sophisticated security communications system to combat terrorism.

Safaricom sources have confirmed to HumanIPO a story that appeared in the Daily Nation yesterday, which said the telecom was yesterday presenting the system to president Uhuru Kenyatta and top military and security bosses after being approached by the government over assisting with terror prevention.

The system would allow security personnel to monitor any area, detect security incidents, direct police response and monitor the flow of people and traffic in towns, with a command and control centre forming the hub of security coordination and CCTV and other surveillance systems used.

The report said Safaricom will initially fund the project itself, with repayment coming in the form of KSh7 billion (US$80 million) worth of spectrum and KSh7 billion over a period of five to seven years.
