Find-A-Med app has emerged the winner of the mobile app competition at the Mobile West Africa 2014 event in Lagos, Nigeria, after pitching its products alongside four other groups of developers.
The app – which makes healthcare facilities across Nigeria accessible and searchable from mobile phones – was voted the winner by delegates at the conference.
“Although Nigeria has many medical centres of varying quality, there is no accessible, searchable database. Find-A-Med was created to solve this challenge,” said co-founder Emeka Onyenwe.
The app is location-based and helps users find their nearest health centres, while also storing and keeps track of a user’s basic health information, which could be life-saving during an emergency.
It currently has more than 5,000 medical facilities listed and is available for free download on Google Play. Users of devices running on other platforms can also access it via a mobile web platform.
The feature that caught the attention of delegates is the app’s turn-by-turn directions to medical centres closest to user’s present location. Health facilities on the app include hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, dentists, eye care specialists and laboratories.
