Vooka allows Kenyans to access StarTimes channels through mobile

Mobile applications services company Rapid Communications has launched Vooka Online, which will stream live StarTimes television channels along with from Bollywood and Usalama content, allowing Kenyans to watch TV on their smartphones.

Speaking during the launch of the service, Rapid Communications chief executive officer (CEO) Anwar Majid Hussein said the demand for smartphones in Kenya has greatly increased in the past few years and users are demanding more and better content.

“In the wake of the current cognitively complex work environment coupled with competitive pressures and technological breakthroughs, the current smartphone user desires some leisure breaks. What better way to relax than to access entertainment from the gadget at hand – the mobile. With this in mind, Rapid Communications developed the mobile TV that streams live videos in order to fulfill the entertainment need as well as provide content,” said Hussein.

To access the service, users will be required to have a smartphone that can access 3G internet, before visiting the website. To connect to the StarTimes channels, users will be required to send an SMS to 22832 with the word ‘StarTimes’ then select various channels.

Streaming will cost KSh10 (US$0.10) per day for all StarTimes channels and KSh5 (US$0.05) per day for streaming one channel.

The service enables subscribers to access their channels of choice, with the Vooka streaming platform providing Kenyans with another medium to expand their viewing options without having to pay for monthly subscriptions.

“Kenyans do not need to worry about missing their favorite TV programme while stuck in traffic, they will now have TV on the go,” said Hussein.
